Subject: Lower Churchill announcement
Status: OR

Montréal, 10 March 1998

Dear Environmental Warriors,

That was a tremendous job by everyone, confronting the Lower
Churchill announcement with demonstrations, counter-announcements,
and threats of boycotts. Congratulations, especially to the folks
at Sheshatshiu and Sept-Iles (Mamit Innuat). As a result, the
Canadian press gave our side LOTS of favourable coverage.

Here in Montréal, the very fast reaction of American environmental
groups impressed friend and foe alike, and I have had numerous
requests for their text. So it is typed out below and can be
generally distributed. Special thanks to John Clark of Burlington
and Andy Mason of Albany.

This will be a long tough battle against the Lower Churchill
mega-project, but it appears no tougher than the one we fought
and won against Great Whale. And a footnote about Great Whale:
Premier Bouchard said yesterday on television that it is a good
thing that Québec had not tried to build Great Whale; it would
have ended up being too expensive!! Perhaps he will now be
gracious enough to send a thank-you note to us Cree and non-Cree
protesters for having saved everyone some money.

The text from the USA follows below.

In solidarity,
Tom

We, the undersigned, stand in solidarity with the Innu people
of Québec and Labrador (Nitassinan) who oppose further
construction on the Churchill River without their consent.

We further state that we, as concerned citizens and organizations,
will oppose the import and distribution of power from the
Lower Churchill, and refuse the purchase of electricity from
this and other environmentally and socially irresponsible
developments.

We, the intended customers for the power generated from the
Lower Churchill development, shall oppose all bond issues and
purchase contracts needed to finance this destructive project.
